The Forum for Development, Culture and Dialogue (FDCD) strongly condemns the horrific explosion that took place at Saint Elias Church in Duila\u2019a \u2013 Damascus. Nearly 25 people lost their lives instantly, and more than 50 others were injured and taken to hospitals and tens were traumatized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is the first incident of its kind to occur inside a church in Syria, particularly in Damascus. Our sister organization, the Syrian Charity for Sustainable Development (CSSD), has declared three days of mourning, as many of the victims\u2014whether killed or injured\u2014were beneficiaries of FDCD\u2019s relief programs and children in the child friendly center program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This tragic event unfolded in a sacred and peaceful place. According to reports, two armed individuals\u2014believed to be affiliated with ISIS\u2014entered the church, opened fire, and then detonated explosive belts, targeting the 350 worshipers present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the innocent victims were children, men, and women, including Father Boutros, the parish priest. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate has condemned the attack, along with the UN Special Envoy to Syria, numerous churches, and civil society organizations. The government has launched an investigation, and we await further findings. This act of violence has deeply shaken the Christian community, especially amid reports of additional threats to churches in the Hama region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At FDCD, we mourn with the families of Saint Elias Church and denounce this brutal act. We ask for God\u2019s mercy on the souls of the martyrs, healing for the wounded, and comfort for the grieving community of Duila\u2019a.
