He left his native country in 2019 to travel far away from home to Morocco to pursue his higher education studies. Although the flight to Mohammed V in Morocco only took him just under eight hours, little did he know that he would paradoxically be embarking on a long spiritual and mental journey that would radically change the course of his life.

Yannick comes from a Christian family. His father is a committed Catholic who attended the Seminary aspiring to become a priest in his youth, and his mother is an evangelical Protestant, very faithful servant and working in the service of the Lord. From the age of 11, Yannick’s childhood was thrown into turmoil by his parents’ divorce. His father, who worked, struggled to find enough time to devote to a thorough family upbringing for him and his brother while their mother was away following the divorce.

At the age of 12, Yannick gave his life to the Lord. Ever since, he has dedicated his life as a young boy to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ to his classmates. Shortly afterwards, he experienced the unstable adolescence, not to mention a family situation that with economic/financial hardships and the vicissitudes of life, which led him to question his life and lose faith. Between the ages of 17 and 19, he completely lost his zeal for the Lord. It was in this instability that Yannick arrived in Morocco.

In 2020, during a Bible study cell held by the EEAM church in the house he shared with his roommates who then-serving in the church, he heard God’s voice again and repented. Soon, he began to develop a passion for the Holy Scriptures and questions relating to the Christian faith. Within a year, he also began serving in the youth department of the same church, later taking on the role of Team-Leader of the worship and prayer team.

We’ve been living with Yannick since December 2023. Although his academic and religious progress were crystal clear over the years, we detected in Yannick a strong need to learn about family life. A life he had lost since the age of 10. Upon receiving other brothers and sisters in his situation, we realized that beyond the spiritual guidance that the ministry provides through preaching and prayer, young people in Morocco are also in dire need of emotional support. For most of them face loneliness when they leave their country, cut off from their families. Others, like Yannick, come from homes where the family has often experienced a great deal of instability. This is how God’s call to us to support these young people in every way, and especially on a familial standpoint. After talking to Yannick several times, I asked him to do a self-assessment for the period he’s been living with us. In these words, he makes a brief statement of his own:

”Being with you, I have the impression that God, during my 23-24 years, has decided to give me once again the chance to live under the roof of parents who exercise loving leadership, so that I could learn God’s love through the family. It’s a grace for me to see that there’s also hope for me, and I had to overcome the fear that I would later find a dysfunctional home by risking being an absent father, unable to deal with the clash between generations.

By being with you, I’ve learned to be open and hospitable, just as you are. I’ve learned patience and mutual understanding, as well as invaluable notions of breeding and farming. I’ve also learned a lot of practical things that someone can easily understand by being part of a family such as cooking, cleaning and certain notions of good manners and living together (common sense). I’ve also learned that in a family, love needs to be expressed in words as in deeds alone, as it has always been difficult for me to do so. I’ve learned to have deeper considerations for people of the opposite sex, and especially for the woman, who one day, will become my wife. I’ve learned that a well-balanced house prays together—which was not taught to me while growing up.

The truth is, I feel that despite my relationship with God, I had many ideas within me that would have led me to reproduce the same old/broken patterns cultivated from the home in which I grew up; and God took pity on me by having you opened your arms to me. Words cannot really express how much these months by your side have influenced my vision for life and outlook for the future. I am infinitely grateful to you, to our Lord and the entire organization that has made it possible for you to come to us.”

Yannick finished his studies in International Business last June, and we were there to help him with his final year project, where the instructors fully praised his education and gave us the same consideration as his biological parents. This is what we strive to do for all young people. Now, he aspires to start his professional career once he gets back home to build stability, and then embark on in agriculture. Beyond that, he also dreams of pursuing serious theological studies to proclaim the good news of God’s love in Jesus Christ to the nations.

May God keep us!

Pastor Mputu Clement

Mission Co-Worker with the Evangelical Church in Morocco
