In a historic step the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA)-SA Synod<\/a> issued a clear statement in support of the non-violent Palestinian struggle. The church\u2019s national conference approved the resolution on 10 July 2016. The UCCSA was the only South African church who publicly supported the now historic South African Kairos call of 1985.\u00a0 In it South African theologians asked the world to help end apartheid. The world listened and it helped. In recent years the churches of the world have started to speak up about fundamentalist, Zionist readings of the Bible that support Israel\u2019s oppression of the Palestinians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Congregational Church of Southern Africa issues this statement to express our deep concern over the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. We urge all parties involved to seek a peaceful resolution and commit to the principles of justice, human rights, and reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a church rooted in the teachings of Christ, we believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every human being, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, or religious affiliation. We acknowledge the complexity of the Israel-Palestine conflict and the historical and emotional significance it holds for both peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We affirm the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security within recognized and mutually agreed-upon borders. We recognize the importance of upholding international law, including the relevant United Nations resolutions, in resolving the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UCCSA  calls for an immediate cessation of violence and the protection of civilians on all sides. We mourn the loss of innocent lives, express our deepest condolences to the families affected, and pray for healing and comfort during these difficult times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land, advocating for the rights and well-being of both Israelis and Palestinians. We support efforts to foster dialogue, understanding, and cooperation between the two communities. Our prayers and support extend to all those working tirelessly to build bridges of peace, justice, and reconciliation in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, we call upon our governments and the international community to intensify their efforts to facilitate a just and lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. This must include addressing the root causes of the conflict, such as occupation, settlement expansion, and the denial of basic human rights and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UCCSA  encourages its members to engage in prayer, education, and advocacy for a just peace in the Holy Land. We urge our congregations to promote interfaith dialogue, support local peace initiatives, and engage in acts of solidarity with those affected by the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, the UCCSA  reaffirms its commitment to promoting peace, justice, and reconciliation in the Israel-Palestine conflict. We stand united with our global ecumenical partners in working towards a future where Israelis and Palestinians can coexist in peace, security, and mutual respect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
