Puerto Rico has just relived one of those episodes that bring out death, sadness, and desolation. The recently privatized electrical system collapsed during a sustained economic crisis, intense migration to the North, and rampant corruption in its political class. News outlets report that 1.5 million subscribers were affected by a system blackout that, in several locations, lasted nearly a week. Even as of this writing, entire communities have not received electricity service. The outage could have had a direct economic impact of over $552 million for the country, considering an estimated 48 hours without electricity for most customers and businesses. Another $20 million in losses were also estimated due to a lack of income for the Electric Power Authority (PREPA) and LUMA Energy. The privatizing company, LUMA Energy, could not have been more irresponsible with the explanations it tried to give to the public. Five days after the massive blackout that left the Island in the dark, the company LUMA Energy still cannot say why it happened. “We know that a breaker failed. We know that there was a cascading blackout throughout Puerto Rico. We don’t know why that breaker failed and many other questions regarding that event,”<\/em> said LUMA Energy President and CEO Wayne Stensby at a press conference last Monday. https:\/\/www.noticel.com\/ahora\/top-stories\/20220412\/luma-energy-aun-no-sabe-la-causa-del-apagon\/.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not surprising that restlessness and despair settle in Puerto Rican families. Just four years ago, the onslaught of Hurricane Maria left all of Puerto Rico without power in 2018, exposing the fragile state of the power grid on the Island of 3.3 million people. https:\/\/www.americaeconomia.com\/puerto-rico-apagon-poblacion-luz<\/a>. It claimed the lives of almost 3,000 people, most of them associated, directly or indirectly, with the energy collapse of that time. https:\/\/theconversation.com\/el-huracan-maria-causo-2-975-muertos-en-puerto-rico-but-great-part-of-the-disaster-could-avoid-103281<\/a>. Therefore, it is not an exaggeration when we say that every time the electrical service collapses on the Island, a terrible sense of death takes over the residents of Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through Holy Week, we proclaim that Jesus of Nazareth defeated death. His testimony of life, love, forgiveness, justice, and hope was stronger than the tomb that sheltered his body after his crucifixion and death. Out of my conviction of that eternal truth, I wonder how the testimony of Resurrection by Jesus Christ could be reflected in the everyday experience of communities in Puerto Rico that affirm life amid death, solidarity amid injustice, and hope amid despair. I wanted to witness those “testimonies of life” within the “spirit of death” that settled in Puerto Rico, given the uneasiness marked by the enormous blackout in the electrical service on the Island.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For several years, AMANESER 2025, one of Global Ministries’ Partners on the Island, has been promoting community organizing. Through workshops and dialogues, communities discuss and solve problems primarily associated with the electric service and the alienation caused by the social crisis in Puerto Rico. Communities have been holding workshops to deal with the promotion of solar energy systems and strategies to develop resilience in emergency situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as I knew of the outage, I sent a message to the representatives of communities organized through AMANESER 2025. I wanted to know what was going on and how we could be of help in those troubled times. These were the testimonies of some of the families. Most of them sent their brief reports from different towns, wards, rural and urban communities around the Island:     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Greetings from the Villa Borinquen Community in Puerto Nuevo, San Juan, on behalf of Ivette and Orlando. We are part of the Villa Borinquen group, AMANESER 2025. Our solar system has been working excellently for more than a year, even when the electrical system on the Island has failed. We have not to lack of service thanks to the project. We are very grateful to our mentor Juan Rosario and the resilient group of Villa Nevarez. God bless you all.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hello. We report from the ABRASO group in Bayam\u00f3n, a member of AMANESER 2025. We have two types of equipment working perfectly. One has been working since March 9, the other since March 16. We have the installation of third equipment pending for this month. All going well, thank God. Wilma Deliz, Pedro Sarkis and Rafael Morales. “<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Greetings, brothers and sisters!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our group in Rio Ca\u00f1as, Caimito- El Coqui, have 6 systems, all working well.  There is only one disassembled to seal the roof and another that now seems to have a problem with charging from the solar panels. We are monitoring that problem. Thank you. Angel Juan Torres S\u00e1nchez<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Greetings, Pastor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are from Cayey and have had a very different and positive experience since we have our solar system through the support of AMANESER 2025 and Juan Rosario. During events like the one we experienced earlier, the situation was much more difficult. Now we keep our essential items working. We need to continue shaping this excellent community concept and for a new conscious culture to be incorporated that respects our environment. We need to treat nature as if it is our sister. We thank God for the system since it has helped us give my 97-year-old father quality of life. Since we were without electricity, we were calm, but the system allowed us with the fridge to keep food. “Greetings from the Yabucoa – Humacao group<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The terrible blackout, which affected the entire country, leads us to reflect on the need to continue working for the Renewable Energy Project. This is a viable alternative to the irresponsibility of those who run or manage the country’s electrical system. Although it is an innovative project for Yabucoa – Humacao, we recognize that different technical situations may arise. Among them is the case of our friend Angel, who has had problems with the investor. We contacted Juan Rosario to discuss the situation and identify possible solutions. In my particular case and that of other colleagues, all our equipment is working perfectly. Our goal should be that all the families of our beloved country can know the virtues of renewable energy. Companions, let’s go for more!”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Greetings to the entire group of AMANESER 2025 from our country. It fills me with joy and emotion to read the testimonies of all the colleagues from the different communities. We are all experiencing the use of photovoltaic systems for emergencies, a project developed by AMANESER 2025, led by Juan Rosario, and supported by Global Ministries. They have promoted the Community Program so that it becomes a reality. Today, in the face of this energy crisis, we are experiencing peace and security in the middle of the situation. Gratitude for sharing the common good and good coexistence united all outstanding achievements. I urge you to continue promoting this process, which will greatly benefit us as a Nation. I felt how my spirit was renewed as a result of this dialogue. Thank God for receiving such a great sign that life can defeat death in our daily lives. Christ is risen in Puerto Rico! He is alive in the communities that today affirm new possibilities to build a bright present and a future of hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sent a message to these beloved communities proposing a new way of making community. These were my words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hello. I deeply appreciate all the answers I have read about how the communities that are part of AMANESER 2025 have been able to face this energy crisis. Definitely, this is a prophetic sign of the accumulated capacity that the organization has generated to continue with its task of promoting a solidarity work model in the country. Let us continue affirming community, solidarity, solar energy and the proper use of resources to affirm full life in Puerto Rico. Hugs and blessings.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CRISTO RESUCITA EN PUERTO RICO: EL TESTIMONIO DE LAS<\/strong> COMUNIDADES DE AMANESER 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puerto Rico reci\u00e9n acaba de revivir un episodio de \u00e9sos que huele a muerte, tristeza y desolaci\u00f3n.  En medio de una crisis econ\u00f3mica sostenida, una migraci\u00f3n intensa hacia el Norte y la corrupci\u00f3n rampante en su clase pol\u00edtica, el sistema el\u00e9ctrico, recientemente privatizado, colaps\u00f3.  Los medios noticiosos reportan que 1.5 millones de abonados se vieron afectados por un apag\u00f3n en el sistema que, en varios lugares, se extendi\u00f3 por casi una semana.  A\u00fan al d\u00eda en que escribimos estas l\u00edneas, hay comunidades enteras que no han recibido el servicio el\u00e9ctrico.  Igual se reporta que dicho apag\u00f3n pudo haber tenido un impacto econ\u00f3mico directo de sobre $552 millones para el pa\u00eds, considerando un estimado de 48 horas sin servicio el\u00e9ctrico para la mayor\u00eda de clientes y empresas. Y a este escenario se suman otros $20 millones en p\u00e9rdidas por falta de ingresos para la Autoridad de Energ\u00eda El\u00e9ctrica (AEE) y de LUMA Energy. La empresa privatizadora, LUMA Energy, no pudo ser m\u00e1s irresponsable con las explicaciones que pretendi\u00f3 dar a la ciudadan\u00eda.   Cinco d\u00edas luego del masivo apag\u00f3n que dej\u00f3 el pa\u00eds a oscuras, y ya con sobre el 99% de los clientes con su servicio de energ\u00eda el\u00e9ctrica restablecido, la empresa LUMA Energy sabe lo que ocurri\u00f3, pero todav\u00eda no puede decir por qu\u00e9 pas\u00f3.  “Sabemos que el breaker<\/em> fall\u00f3. Sabemos que hubo un apag\u00f3n en cascada a lo largo de todo Puerto Rico. No sabemos por qu\u00e9 fue que fall\u00f3 ese breaker <\/em>y muchas otras preguntas referentes a ese evento”, dijo el lunes en una conferencia de prensa, el presidente y CEO de LUMA Energy, Wayne Stensby. https:\/\/www.noticel.com\/ahora\/top-stories\/20220412\/luma-energy-aun-no-sabe-la-causa-del-apagon\/<\/a> . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No es de extra\u00f1ar que en las familias puertorrique\u00f1as se instale el desasosiego y la desesperaci\u00f3n.  Hace apenas cuatro a\u00f1os, el embate del Hurac\u00e1n Mar\u00eda dej\u00f3 sin energ\u00eda a todo Puerto Rico en 2018, dej\u00f3 al descubierto el fr\u00e1gil estado de la red el\u00e9ctrica en la isla de 3,3 millones de habitantes.  https:\/\/www.americaeconomia.com\/puerto-rico-apagon-poblacion-luz<\/a>. El mismo cobr\u00f3 la vida de casi 3,000 personas, la mayor\u00eda de ellas asociada, directa o indirectamente, al colapso energ\u00e9tico de aquel entonces. https:\/\/theconversation.com\/el-huracan-maria-causo-2-975-muertos-en-puerto-rico-pero-gran-parte-del-desastre-pudo-evitarse-103281<\/a>   Por ello, no es una exageraci\u00f3n cuando decimos que cada vez que el servicio el\u00e9ctrico colapsa en la isla, un terrible sentido de muerte se apodera de los residentes en Puerto Rico.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trav\u00e9s de la Semana Santa, los cristianos y las cristianas proclamamos que Jes\u00fas de Nazaret venci\u00f3 a la muerte. Su testimonio de vida, amor, perd\u00f3n, justicia y esperanza fue m\u00e1s fuerte que la tumba que cobij\u00f3 su cuerpo despu\u00e9s de su crucifixi\u00f3n y muerte. Desde mi convicci\u00f3n de esa verdad eterna, me preguntaba de qu\u00e9 manera el testimonio de la Resurrecci\u00f3n de Jesucristo podr\u00eda reflejarse en la vivencia cotidiana de comunidades en Puerto Rico que afirman la vida en medio de la muerte, la solidaridad en medio de la injusticia y la esperanza en medio de la desesperaci\u00f3n. Quer\u00eda presenciar esos “testimonios de vida” dentro del “esp\u00edritu de la muerte” que se instal\u00f3 en Puerto Rico, ante el malestar marcado por el enorme apag\u00f3n en el servicio el\u00e9ctrico en la Isla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desde hace varios a\u00f1os, AMANESER 2025, una de las contrapartes de Global Ministries en la Isla, ha estado promoviendo la organizaci\u00f3n comunitaria. A trav\u00e9s de talleres y di\u00e1logos, las comunidades discuten y resuelven problemas principalmente asociados con el servicio el\u00e9ctrico y la alienaci\u00f3n causada por la crisis social en Puerto Rico. Las comunidades se han entrenado para laborar con la promoci\u00f3n de la instalaci\u00f3n de sistemas de energ\u00eda solar y estrategias para desarrollar resiliencia en situaciones de emergencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tan pronto como supe del apag\u00f3n, envi\u00e9 un mensaje a los representantes de las comunidades organizadas a trav\u00e9s de AMANESER 2025. Quer\u00eda saber qu\u00e9 estaba pasando y c\u00f3mo pod\u00edamos ser de ayuda en esos momentos dif\u00edciles. Estos fueron los testimonios de algunas de las familias. La mayor\u00eda de ellos enviaron sus breves informes desde diferentes pueblos, barrios, comunidades rurales y urbanas alrededor de la Isla:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somos parte del grupo de Villa Borinquen, AMANESER 2025.  Nuestro sistema solar lleva m\u00e1s de un a\u00f1o de trabajo excelente, a\u00fan en circunstancias en las que el sistema el\u00e9ctrico en la isla ha fallado.  No hemos carecido del servicio gracias al proyecto.  Estamos muy agradecidos de nuestro mentor Juan Rosario y del resilente grupo de Villa Nevarez. Nosotros desde Cayey<\/strong> hemos tenido una experiencia muy diferente y positiva desde que tenemos nuestro sistema solar a trav\u00e9s del apoyo de Amaneser 2025 y Juan Rosario. Durante eventos como el que acabamos de experimentar anteriormente era mucho m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil la situaci\u00f3n. Ahora nos mantenemos con nuestros enseres b\u00e1sicos y esenciales funcionando. Ahora lo que necesitamos es continuar d\u00e1ndole forma a este maravilloso concepto comunitario y que se incorpore una nueva cultura consciente que respete a nuestro medio ambiente y naturaleza como si fuera nuestro hermana y hermano. Damos gracias a Dios por el sistema, ya que nos ha ayudado a darle calidad de vida a mi pap\u00e1, de 97 a\u00f1os. El terrible apag\u00f3n, que afect\u00f3 todo el pa\u00eds, nos lleva a reflexionar sobre la necesidad de continuar trabajando en pro del Proyecto de Energ\u00eda Renovable.   Queda evidenciando que esta es una alternativa viable ante la irresponsabilidad de los que dirigen o administran el sistema el\u00e9ctrico del pa\u00eds.   Aunque por ser un proyecto innovador para Yabucoa – Humacao reconocemos que pueden surgir diferentes situaciones de tipo t\u00e9cnico.  Entre ellos el caso del compa\u00f1ero Angel, que ha tenido problemas con el inversor.  Nos comunicamos con Juan Rosario para dialogar la situaci\u00f3n e identificar posibles soluciones. En mi caso particular y de otros compa\u00f1eros, hasta este momento todos nuestros equipos est\u00e1n funcionando a perfecci\u00f3n.   Nuestra meta debe ser que todas las familias de nuestra amada PATRIA puedan conocer las virtudes de la ENERG\u00cdA RENOVABLE.  Compa\u00f1eros, \u00a1Vamos por m\u00e1s  !\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
